DESCRIPTION:In the last centuries\, colonialism has shaped our social hierarchies and impacted on our emotional and mental functioning. Psychology and psychotherapy have developed amid the same social environments that created and fostered oppression and distress. SUMMARY:Justice & Liberation in the Therapy Room
DESCRIPTION:As therapists\, how do we support clients that have been through adverse experiences relating to structural oppression and discrimination? Can we do this in a way that does not reproduce dynamics of oppression\, silencing\, or missing parts of their experience in the room? \n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, many of our current theories and practices do not help us understand and address these issues directly. Nor do they give us the skills to reflect in ways that will help us develop safer spaces and limit the potential for harm.  \n\n\n\nTherapeutic relationships can be a space to examine links between the social context and a person’s inner process\, as well as the direct impact it might be having on a person’s mental and emotional wellbeing. In this workshop we will examine what working towards epistemic and social justice for our clients might look like in the room with the help of theories like liberation psychology and decolonial approaches. We will also reflect together and challenge ourselves gently\, to consider our roles: being part of the problem\, and how we can become part of the solution. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nStructure\n\n\n\nThe workshop will consist of two presentation blocks followed by two group discussions and reflective time with the aid of prompts and questions. Duration is 2h30 with a 15 to 20 min break in the middle. Attendance numbers will be limited to facilitate a discussion. \n\n\n\nGoals\n\n\n\nThe goal of this workshop is to support mental health practitioners in embedding social justice principles and practices in their work with clients in a directly applicable way. What will be covered: \n\n\n\n\nLearning about Epistemic Justice and Injustice in and out of the therapy room\n\n\n\nExploring Liberation psychology principles\n\n\n\nExamining frameworks and interventions that can help us practice from social justice and decolonial lens\n\n\n\nDevelop a self-reflective stance to integrate this knowledge into our practice\n\n\n\n\n(This is a live event that will be most beneficial for participants who engage with the material and discussions. It will not be recorded\, but a short handout with definitions and references will be provided) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the facilitator:\n\n\n\nLucia Sarmiento Verano is a humanistic psychotherapist in private practice in Oxford and online. DESCRIPTION:In an unequal society\, social class carries much meaning in how perspectives are shaped and has a significant impact on a person’s material and emotional conditions. What exactly is its impact on mental health? And how does it show up (consciously or unconsciously) in the therapeutic space? \n\n\n\nClass\, of course\, intersects with other axes of power and oppression to create complex experiences that we will help our clients untangle in the work. However\, if the therapist is not acquainted with the impact of inequalities on people and on themselves\, class differences in the therapeutic dyad may constitute at best a barrier to deeper work and at worst\, a risk of harm to the client. \n\n\n\nIt is time that we address the deeper intrapsychic and relational processes linked to social class\, as well as the mechanisms of class reproduction (and how they might come into play in the therapeutic relationship)\, so we can offer safer spaces to our clients. To this end\, this event will provide a combination of Sociological and Psychoanalytic knowledge. \n\n\n\nThe aim of this session will be to: \n\n\n\n\nExplore the impact of social class and its intersections on mental health\n\n\n\nExamine how these inequalities relating to class can influence the therapeutic relationship\n\n\n\nLearn how therapists can work towards supporting clients affected by this ethically\n\n\n\n\nThe session will last 2 hours\, including presentation time and space for questions or reflections. \n\n\n\nIt is aimed at mental health professionals and everyone interested in the links between social class inequalities and mental health. \n\n\n\n(This is a live event that will be most beneficial for participants who engage with the material and discussions. DESCRIPTION:Following our first meeting and wishes for this to continue and (hopefully) become a regular encounter\, I will be hosting this (slightly longer) group in May. \n\n\n\nOn this second meeting\, the supporting material will be: \n\n\n\nAddressing Cultural Shame \n\n\n\nSince this is such a personal subject I hope this space will be an opportunity to share safely some of our experiences paired with our reflections about our work surrounding this topic. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAim:The space will allow us to discuss some of the themes that I explore on the blog but not JUST this. These groups will be: \n\n\n\n– An opportunity to share reactions and ask questions about the topics of different blog pieces in order to dive deeper– Go further together and support each other in these challenging reflections– Continue learning and self-development in topics of anti-oppressive practice \n\n\n\nI look forward to meeting you! \n\n\n\nThe space will remain anti-oppressive and inclusive and a space where commonly marginalised voices will be given priority. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIf you are not a subscriber and would like to attend this event please get in contact and let me know how you would benefit from it.
