SUMMARY:Webinar: What Therapists Need to Know About Power
DESCRIPTION:*Free for Community of Practice members* \n\n\n\n[if you are a community member please use your code to book your free ticket\, or join us to claim it along with more benefits] \n\n\n\nQuestion of power dynamics and how they affect people are often more prevalent in philosophical scholarship than in therapeutic thinking. However\, lack of knowledge and disavowal of power’s impact on mental health and on relationships are a key problem in our profession. It may mean we miss important aspects of a client’s experience\, or\, at worst\, it can cause harm within the therapeutic relationship. \n\n\n\nThis introductory session is an attempt to translate what philosophy tells us about power in our lives in a way that is directly applicable to therapeutic work. For this\, we will cover: \n\n\n\n\nthe social theories on structural and personal power\n\n\n\nthe impact of power on mental health and the formation of the self\n\n\n\nhow to work with it in therapy settings\n\n\n\n\nThis is an introductory webinar that will be followed by a more in-depth workshop for those interested in reflecting on this topic. It will last 1 hour\, including a 45 min presentation and space for questions or reflections. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is aimed at mental health professionals and everyone interested in the links between social inequalities\, power and mental health. \n\n\n\n(This live event will be recorded. The fee includes access to the recording for 2 weeks after the event\, and a handout with references that will be shared via email after the presentation.)About the speaker:\n\n\n\nLucia Sarmiento Verano is a humanistic psychotherapist in private practice in Oxford and online. With a background in Sociology and Political Science\, she has worked as an anti-racism trainer and consultant with mental health organisations. She has experience delivering training and facilitating reflective discussions around topics of anti-racism and decolonial thinking in mental health. Lucia is now undertaking research on the topics of anti-oppression and resistance as a Ph.D. student at the Birkbeck University of London. \n\n\n\nWhat people have said about Lucia’s training events: \n\n\n\n” I would recommend\, it is an accessible way to gain valuable insight on topics that are essential for counsellors (but sadly not included within most training)” (Addam) \n\n\n\n” Useful intro to a topic/way of thinking. Approachable and concise.” (EB) \n\n\n\n” Appreciation for the sensitivity brought to social/cultural/historical power in the real world and how this is present in clinical interactions.” (Kartika)

SUMMARY:Workshop: Power in Therapy
DESCRIPTION:This reflective workshop is a continuation to the webinar titled ‘What Therapists Need to Know About Power’. Building on the definitions and questions presented during the webinar\, we will gather as a small group to reflect on how power dynamics have impacted both our lives and our work. \n\n\n\nAfter a brief check-in\, the facilitated discussion will be structured as follows: \n\n\n\n\nexamining my relationship with Power in life and work\n\n\n\ndiscussion around a case study – reflections on therapeutic relationships\n\n\n\nhow do we keep questioning power dynamics in the profession & how do we support clients develop resistance strategies in their lives?\n\n\n\n\nSome reflective prompts as well as case studies will be provided to start the discussions\, but the space will remain open to what participants bring and to how the discussion unfolds. \n\n\n\nTo make this space as generative as possible\, all participants need to have seen the webinar presentation previous to their attendance. The webinar took place on October 13th. For those who haven’t attended\, I ask that they purchase the add-on ‘webinar recording’ with their ticket. They will be sent the link to the recording so they can be up to date with the information required for the discussion. \n\n\n\nThe session will last 2 hours with a short break in the middle. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is aimed at mental health professionals\, helpers and everyone interested in the links between social inequalities\, power and mental health. \n\n\n\n(This is a live event that will be most beneficial for participants who engage with the material and discussions. It will not be recorded\, and a certificate of attendance will be provided.) \n\n\n\nTicketing options:\n\n\n\nDifferent prices have been offered to cater to varying financial situations. Please choose the ticket that corresponds to your current circumstances. \n\n\n\nA small number of tickets have been reserved for trainees\, people in financial hardship\, or people living and working in the Global South. Please contact me directly using the link in my profile (you can also find it below) to let me know you need access to these tickets and I will be happy to arrange it. \n\n\n\n(Sadly I am having to add: if you are asking for access to these tickets\, please treat me with the same respect you expect from others. Also\, due to the political situation I will not respond to anonymous messages. Thank you.) \n\n\n\nAbout the facilitator/speaker:\n\n\n\nLucia Sarmiento Verano is a humanistic psychotherapist in private practice in Oxford and online. SUMMARY:Webinar: neurodivergence\, an anti-oppressive perspective
DESCRIPTION:Understanding our experiences within a social and historical context. \n\n\n\nWith a focus on autism and ADHD\, we will reflect on how an anti-oppressive perspective on Neurodivergence can help us understand our experiences within a social and historical context. \n\n\n\nConversations about Neurodivergence and mental health are on the rise and there is an increased understanding of neurodivergent people’s experiences and our needs. Most of these spaces are focused on finding language and validation for our experience\, and on educating practitioners about practical ways to support us. \n\n\n\nThis event will have a slightly different focus: we will examine what recent changes in our social context have to do with increased pathologisation of neurodivergence. From this\, we will explore how these changes foster external and internal ableism\, creating long-term distress. \n\n\n\nThe space will be held with awareness of the interconnectedness of all oppressive systems and holding collective liberation as a goal. \n\n\n\nThis event is suitable for both mental health practitioners and clients or service users alike. It will be especially helpful for neurodivergent people exploring collective understandings of their challenges and the social context. \n\n\n\n(This live event will be recorded. The fee includes access to the recording for 2 weeks after the event\, and a handout with references that will be shared via email after the presentation.)
