SUMMARY:Webinar: neurodivergence\, an anti-oppressive perspective
DESCRIPTION:Understanding our experiences within a social and historical context. \n\n\n\nWith a focus on autism and ADHD\, we will reflect on how an anti-oppressive perspective on Neurodivergence can help us understand our experiences within a social and historical context. \n\n\n\nConversations about Neurodivergence and mental health are on the rise and there is an increased understanding of neurodivergent people’s experiences and our needs. Most of these spaces are focused on finding language and validation for our experience\, and on educating practitioners about practical ways to support us. \n\n\n\nThis event will have a slightly different focus: we will examine what recent changes in our social context have to do with increased pathologisation of neurodivergence. From this\, we will explore how these changes foster external and internal ableism\, creating long-term distress. \n\n\n\nThe space will be held with awareness of the interconnectedness of all oppressive systems and holding collective liberation as a goal. \n\n\n\nThis event is suitable for both mental health practitioners and clients or service users alike. It will be especially helpful for neurodivergent people exploring collective understandings of their challenges and the social context. \n\n\n\n(This live event will be recorded. The fee includes access to the recording for 2 weeks after the event\, and a handout with references that will be shared via email after the presentation.)

Building on the definitions and questions presented during the webinar\, we will gather as a small group to reflect on how power dynamics have impacted both our lives and our work. \n\n\n\nAfter a brief check-in\, the facilitated discussion will be structured as follows: \n\n\n\n\nexamining my relationship with Power in life and work\n\n\n\ndiscussion around a case study – reflections on therapeutic relationships\n\n\n\nhow do we keep questioning power dynamics in the profession & how do we support clients develop resistance strategies in their lives?\n\n\n\n\nSome reflective prompts as well as case studies will be provided to start the discussions\, but the space will remain open to what participants bring and to how the discussion unfolds. \n\n\n\nTo make this space as generative as possible\, all participants need to have seen the webinar presentation previous to their attendance. SUMMARY:Webinar: What Therapists Need to Know About Power
DESCRIPTION:*Free for Community of Practice members* \n\n\n\n[if you are a community member please use your code to book your free ticket\, or join us to claim it along with more benefits] \n\n\n\nQuestion of power dynamics and how they affect people are often more prevalent in philosophical scholarship than in therapeutic thinking. However\, lack of knowledge and disavowal of power’s impact on mental health and on relationships are a key problem in our profession. It may mean we miss important aspects of a client’s experience\, or\, at worst\, it can cause harm within the therapeutic relationship. \n\n\n\nThis introductory session is an attempt to translate what philosophy tells us about power in our lives in a way that is directly applicable to therapeutic work. For this\, we will cover: \n\n\n\n\nthe social theories on structural and personal power\n\n\n\nthe impact of power on mental health and the formation of the self\n\n\n\nhow to work with it in therapy settings\n\n\n\n\nThis is an introductory webinar that will be followed by a more in-depth workshop for those interested in reflecting on this topic. It will last 1 hour\, including a 45 min presentation and space for questions or reflections. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is aimed at mental health professionals and everyone interested in the links between social inequalities\, power and mental health. \n\n\n\n(This live event will be recorded. The fee includes access to the recording for 2 weeks after the event\, and a handout with references that will be shared via email after the presentation.)About the speaker:\n\n\n\nLucia Sarmiento Verano is a humanistic psychotherapist in private practice in Oxford and online. Lucia is now undertaking research on the topics of anti-oppression and resistance as a Ph.D. student at the Birkbeck University of London. \n\n\n\nWhat people have said about Lucia’s training events: \n\n\n\n” I would recommend\, it is an accessible way to gain valuable insight on topics that are essential for counsellors (but sadly not included within most training)” (Addam) \n\n\n\n” Useful intro to a topic/way of thinking. Approachable and concise.” (EB) \n\n\n\n” Appreciation for the sensitivity brought to social/cultural/historical power in the real world and how this is present in clinical interactions.” (Kartika)

SUMMARY:Training: Class & Intersections in Therapy
DESCRIPTION:In an unequal society\, social class carries much meaning in how perspectives are shaped and has a significant impact on a person’s material and emotional conditions. What exactly is its impact on mental health? And how does it show up (conscious or unconsciously) in the therapeutic space? \n\n\n\nClass of course\, intersects with other axes of power and oppression to create complex experiences that we will help our clients untangle in the work. However\, if the therapist is not acquainted with the impact of inequalities on people and on themselves\, class differences in the therapeutic dyad may constitute at best a barrier to deeper work and at worst\, risk of harm for the client. \n\n\n\nIt is time that we address the deeper intrapsychic and relational processes linked to social class so we can offer safer spaces to our clients and service users. \n\n\n\nThe aim of this session will be: \n\n\n\n\nExplore the impact of social class and its intersections on mental health\n\n\n\nExamine how these inequalities relating to class can influence the therapeutic relationship\n\n\n\nLearn how therapists can work towards supporting clients affected by this ethically\n\n\n\n\nThe session will last 2h30\, including presentation time and space for questions or reflections. \n\n\n\nIt is aimed at mental health professionals and everyone interested in the links between social class inequalities and mental health. \n\n\n\n(This is a live event that will be most beneficial for participants who engage with the material and discussions. It will not be recorded\, but a short handout with definitions and references will be provided) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketing options:\n\n\n\nDifferent prices have been offered to cater to varying financial situations. Please choose the ticket that corresponds to your current circumstances. \n\n\n\nNo one will be turned down due to financial reasons. A small number of tickets have been reserved for trainees\, people in financial hardship\, or people living and working in the Global South. Please contact me directly using the link in my Eventbrite profile (or the contact form) to let me know you need access to these tickets and I will be happy to arrange it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the facilitator:\n\n\n\nLucia Sarmiento Verano is a humanistic psychotherapist in private practice in Oxford and online. SUMMARY:Webinar: Embodying equity\, principles of disability inclusion
DESCRIPTION:Embodying equity: How principles of disability inclusion can inform a therapeutic practice that is welcoming for all\n\n\n\nThe therapeutic space has come a long way but remains inaccessible to many. At the heart of the issue is that both where and how we practice is rarely wholistically inclusive\, an issue that is systemic in nature. In this lecture\, we will explore how evidence-based inclusive practice\, informed by disability theory\, can be applied in the therapeutic space for the benefit of all. The lecture will include a set of best practice principles to take forward. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\n\n\nDr Julia Ouzia (she/her/hers) is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology and a qualified Gestalt Psychotherapeutic Counsellor in private practice. She aims to provide a practice that is welcoming to all and is particularly interested in supporting those who have faced systemic oppression. Julia conducts research and publishes in the areas of relational psychotherapy and inclusive practice. \n\n\n\nWebsite: https://juliaouzia.com/ \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:Webinar: Colonialism & Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:In the last centuries\, colonialism has shaped our social hierarchies and impacted on our emotional and mental functioning. Psychology and psychotherapy have developed amid the same social environments that created and fostered oppression and distress. With theories and practices that mirror a dominant culture\, many still experience difficulties in finding care that is accessible and adapted to their needs. \n\n\n\nFrom a decolonial perspective\, learning from research and anti-oppressive scholars\, this webinar will provide an overview of the impact of colonialism on both\, individual and community mental health\, as well as access to care\, and what we need to consider to address these problems. \n\n\n\nWe will cover:\n\n\n\n\nThe impact of socio-historical power relations on Mental Health\n\n\n\nThe reproduction of power dynamics within modern therapeutic practices\n\n\n\nHow we can address these issues\n\n\n\n\nThe webinar will last 1 hour\, including a 40 min presentation and space for questions or reflections. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is aimed at mental health professionals and everyone interested in the links between social inequalities and mental health. \n\n\n\n(This live event will be recorded. The fee includes access to the recording for 2 weeks after the event\, and a handout with references that will be shared via email after the presentation.) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\n\n\nLucia Sarmiento Verano is a humanistic psychotherapist in private practice in Oxford and online. With a background in sociology and Political Science\, she has worked as an anti-racism trainer and consultant with mental health organisations. She has experience delivering training and facilitating reflective discussions around topics of anti-racism and decolonial thinking in mental health. Lucia is now preparing to undertake research on the topics of anti-oppression and resistance as a Ph.D. student at the Birkbeck University of London.

SUMMARY:Justice & Liberation in the Therapy Room
DESCRIPTION:As therapists\, how do we support clients that have been through adverse experiences relating to structural oppression and discrimination? Can we do this in a way that does not reproduce dynamics of oppression\, silencing\, or missing parts of their experience in the room? \n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, many of our current theories and practices do not help us understand and address these issues directly. Nor do they give us the skills to reflect in ways that will help us develop safer spaces and limit the potential for harm. \n\n\n\nTherapeutic relationships can be a space to examine links between the social context and a person’s inner process\, as well as the direct impact it might be having on a person’s mental and emotional wellbeing. In this workshop we will examine what working towards epistemic and social justice for our clients might look like in the room with the help of theories like liberation psychology and decolonial approaches. We will also reflect together and challenge ourselves gently\, to consider our roles: being part of the problem\, and how we can become part of the solution. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nStructure\n\n\n\nThe workshop will consist of two presentation blocks followed by two group discussions and reflective time with the aid of prompts and questions. Duration is 2h30 with a 15 to 20 min break in the middle. Attendance numbers will be limited to facilitate a discussion. \n\n\n\nGoals\n\n\n\nThe goal of this workshop is to support mental health practitioners in embedding social justice principles and practices in their work with clients in a directly applicable way. What will be covered: \n\n\n\n\nLearning about Epistemic Justice and Injustice in and out of the therapy room\n\n\n\nExploring Liberation psychology principles\n\n\n\nExamining frameworks and interventions that can help us practice from social justice and decolonial lens\n\n\n\nDevelop a self-reflective stance to integrate this knowledge into our practice\n\n\n\n\n(This is a live event that will be most beneficial for participants who engage with the material and discussions. It will not be recorded\, but a short handout with definitions and references will be provided) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the facilitator:\n\n\n\nLucia Sarmiento Verano is a humanistic psychotherapist in private practice in Oxford and online. SUMMARY:Class & Intersections in Therapy
DESCRIPTION:In an unequal society\, social class carries much meaning in how perspectives are shaped and has a significant impact on a person’s material and emotional conditions. What exactly is its impact on mental health? And how does it show up (consciously or unconsciously) in the therapeutic space? \n\n\n\nClass\, of course\, intersects with other axes of power and oppression to create complex experiences that we will help our clients untangle in the work. However\, if the therapist is not acquainted with the impact of inequalities on people and on themselves\, class differences in the therapeutic dyad may constitute at best a barrier to deeper work and at worst\, a risk of harm to the client. \n\n\n\nIt is time that we address the deeper intrapsychic and relational processes linked to social class\, as well as the mechanisms of class reproduction (and how they might come into play in the therapeutic relationship)\, so we can offer safer spaces to our clients. To this end\, this event will provide a combination of Sociological and Psychoanalytic knowledge. \n\n\n\nThe aim of this session will be to: \n\n\n\n\nExplore the impact of social class and its intersections on mental health\n\n\n\nExamine how these inequalities relating to class can influence the therapeutic relationship\n\n\n\nLearn how therapists can work towards supporting clients affected by this ethically\n\n\n\n\nThe session will last 2 hours\, including presentation time and space for questions or reflections. \n\n\n\nIt is aimed at mental health professionals and everyone interested in the links between social class inequalities and mental health. \n\n\n\n(This is a live event that will be most beneficial for participants who engage with the material and discussions. It will not be recorded\, but a short handout with definitions and references will be provided\, as well as a certificate of attendance.) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketing options:\n\n\n\nDifferent prices have been offered to cater to varying financial situations. Two pieces on the blog gathered the most interest\, so I thought it would be a good idea to go chronologically.\nThis means that on this first meeting\, the supporting material will be the first and last articles on the blog: \nDialogue is not enough\, part 1 & part 2. \nI look forward to meeting you! \nThe space will remain anti-oppressive and inclusive and a space where commonly marginalised voices will be given priority.
